The municipality of Marano di Valpolicella occupies the entire valley between the Progno di Fumane and Progno di Negrar valleys. The Marano valley boasts the best-preserved traditional Valpolicella landscape.

The name Marano comes from the Latin Marianus meaning “of Mario”, suggesting it originated from a Roman landowner. The hills are characterised by orchards, olive groves and vineyards. Here modern farms produce the best Recioto wine in the area, together with some of the most highly appreciated cherries in the entire territory of Verona. 

There are a number of characteristic hamlets (“contrade” or “corti”), in particular, the ancient hamlet of Mondrago, one of the best-preserved villages constructed in Lessinia stone, located in the highest part of the municipality where Valpolicella comes to an end before going up to the mountains.

The near mountain called "monte Castelon" was a relevant settlement in the past due to its strategic position. Today, we can find the rest of these ancient times, with the famous Temple of Minerva, on the southern slope of the mountain. 

The entire municipality is dotted with churches and villas, one is Santa Maria di Valverde, where, when the days are bright, it's possible to see Lake Garda.
